Pioneers

1908, 30 June - 20 August: Harry Dutton and Murray Aunger drove from Adelaide to Darwin in a 25hp Talbot (reg. '474'); the trip took 51 days. Their first attempt in 1907, in another Talbot, had ended at Tennant Creek, hopelessly bogged in mud. On their second attempt they rescued the first car and completed the trip.

Bean

The Aus. National Museum, Canberra, holds the 1924 Bean 14 Sundowner 4-cyl. car of Francis Birtles and Alec Barlow which, in 1926, they drove from Darwin (22 Oct.) to Melbourne taking 8 days and 13 hours.

In 1927-1928 the car was driven from England to Melbourne taking 10 months.
In 2024 Warren Brown and "Matthew Benns, plus a support vehicle and crew, re-enacted the original journey (as far as is practically and safely possible). ..." in a similar (1925) car.

1930: Miss Ada Beal (66) hired Charlie Heard and his Hudson taxi to drive herself, Lil Wilmot and Eileen Gleeny from Lorne to Darwin and back via Brisbane and Sydney. In 2008 Charlie's grandchildren recreated the trip in a 1928 Essex [OTo14].
