In 2014,  the number of refugees and displaced persons exceeded 50 million (20 June). Gough Whitlam died (21 Oct.), and Sir Jack Brabham (19 May). Worldwide, millions of cars were recalled due to faults in Takata airbags. General Motors suffered its own recall scandal, e.g., [bbc]. Of course global warming continued and Tony Abbott's Government continued to be an embarrassment. Oil fell from us$95-$110 per barrel to less than us$55 (West Texas Intermediate) as US "fracking" production built up. However OPEC maintained production supposedly to hurt the new high-cost US sources, or Iran, or both, or who knows; it certainly hurt Russia and various other producers. ULP (petrol) fell from au$1.55± per litre to au$1.20±. The au$ fell from us$0.94± mid year, to us$0.81. Mercedes Benz dominated F1, and Lewis Hamilton won the Drivers' F1 World Championship. A 1962-1963 Ferrari 250 GTO sold at auction for us$38,115,000 (14-15 Aug.).
